Help

Published in the United States by Fawcett Publications under the Gold Medal Book imprint, Harvey Kurtzman's Fast-Acting Help! is an iconic and highly collectible vintage paperback humor anthology. Edited by master cartoonist, satirist, and MAD magazine founding editor Harvey Kurtzman, this volume carries catalog number s1163 and was originally retailed for 35 cents. It compiles the sharpest cartoons, satirical photo features, and irreverent parodies from Help!, the influential humor magazine Kurtzman launched following his departure from MAD, which notably provided early professional exposure to future film legend Terry Gilliam and cartoonist Robert Crumb.

The front cover features a rich burgundy background framing a striking photo-collage composition. The upper left corner displays the Gold Medal Book circular seal, catalog code s1163, and the 35c price mark. Bold white lettering across the top proclaims HARVEY KURTZMAN'S FAST-ACTING, above the massive, bright yellow title HELP!. The subtitle reads Don't reach for that pill! Sit still and go crazy with the best cartoons, photos and satire from America's zaniest humor magazine. The central visual features a nurse-capped figure holding up two satirical panels: a photographic insert on the left depicting a political embrace with a speech bubble saying "Later, you mad fool!", and a comic strip panel on the right with dialogue bubbles. Inside, the pages contain brilliant mid-century counterculture satire, comic strips, and photo-collages. An essential centerpiece collectible for vintage paperback collectors, underground comix historians, and satire archives.
