Humbug

Published in the United States by Ballantine Books, The Humbug Digest is an exceptional and highly collectible vintage paperback humor anthology. Carrying catalog number 242 and originally priced at 35 cents under the Ballantine Books imprint, this volume compiles the best satirical writing and intricate cartooning from Humbug, the brilliant but short-lived satirical magazine launched by MAD magazine defectors Harvey Kurtzman, Will Elder, Al Jaffee, Jack Davis, and Larry Siegel. Known for its sophisticated and adult-leaning humor, Humbug pushed the boundaries of post-war graphic satire.

The front cover features a pale yellow illustrated background framing a bold red hand-lettered title reading THE HUMBUG DIGEST. In the upper left corner, the Ballantine Books "BB" monogram appears alongside the 35c price mark and catalog code 242. The central illustration presents a densely detailed saloon scene drawn in the iconic style of Will Elder or Jack Davis, depicting western characters and cowboys with dialogue bubbles joking: "I hear you been settin' here looking for trouble and yellin', 'Earp! Earp! Earp!'" with the punchline reply: "You got me wrong, Marshall. I wasn't yelling 'Earp!' I was yelling 'Urp!' It's this seltzer I been drinking!" Across the bottom margin, the publisher imprint reads BALLANTINE BOOKS. Inside, the pages contain brilliant, uncompromising mid-century comic art and satire. An essential centerpiece collectible for vintage comic paperback collectors, MAD magazine historians, and classic cartoon archives.
