Les Contes Drolatiques

Published in Paris by Gibert Jeune (Librairie d'Amateurs) located at 61 Boulevard Saint-Michel, "Les Contes Drolatiques" is a magnificent and delightfully satirical edition of Honoré de Balzac's famous collection of ribald, Rabelaisian tales set in the abbeys of Touraine. This celebrated edition is richly enhanced by the inimitable, comical, and exuberant color illustrations of Albert Dubout, one of France's most brilliant and distinctive 20th-century cartoonists and caricaturists, who brings Balzac's medieval wit and larger-than-life characters to vibrant graphic life.

Characterized by a classic cream-colored vintage softcover binding, the cover features striking red and black typography showcasing the title and author, centered above a humorous, flushed-cheek caricature portrait illustrated by Dubout, with the publisher's imprint and Parisian address at the base. Inside, the pages offer a wonderful union of classic French literature and masterful comedic illustration, filled with playful vignettes and full-color plates. An exceptional collector's item and essential treasure for enthusiasts of vintage French illustrated books, Balzac literature, and the brilliant satirical art of Dubout.
