Madeline Ludwig Bemelmans

Published in the United States, Madeline is a legendary vintage children's picture book written and illustrated by Austrian-American author Ludwig Bemelmans. First introduced in 1939, this Caldecott Honor-winning classic tells the heartwarming rhyming story of twelve little schoolgirls in Paris living in an old house covered with vines, led by their devoted teacher Miss Clavel, and focusing on the spunky, smallest girl named Madeline and her adventurous hospital stay following an appendectomy.

Featuring an iconic vintage cover illustration, the front display showcases Ludwig Bemelmans' unmistakable painterly style in lush green and soft teal tones. Framed by Parisian trees in bloom and the soaring silhouette of the Eiffel Tower in the background, Miss Clavel leads her two straight lines of yellow-cloaked and yellow-hatted schoolgirls through a park. The top edge displays the title MADELINE in bold, off-white hand-drawn lettering with a tiny French tricolor flag embedded in the letter E, while the author's name, LUDWIG BEMELMANS, is boldly lettered along the bottom border. Inside, the volume is filled with full-page watercolor paintings and whimsical line drawings capturing iconic Parisian landmarks. An essential centerpiece collectible for children's literature historians, vintage illustration enthusiasts, and classic picture book collectors.
