Tattooed sailor

Published in the United States, The Tattooed Sailor and Other Cartoons from France is an exceptional and highly collectible vintage volume showcasing the distinctive graphic humor and imaginative illustrations of André François (André Farkas). Celebrated globally for his iconic Punch, New Yorker, and advertising artwork, François combined mid-century modernist aesthetics with surreal, witty visual metaphors. Featuring an introduction by legendary Pogo creator Walt Kelly, this book brings together a rich compilation of François' finest drawings, whimsical comic vignettes, and clever graphical parodies.

The front cover features a mid-century green background design with stylized abstract shapes in yellow, white, and blue. The title The Tattooed Sailor is printed across the top in dark serif typography, alongside the subtitle CARTOONS FROM FRANCE BY. The artist's name André François is prominently displayed in bold black lettering on the right, above the credit INTRODUCED BY WALT KELLY. The central artwork showcases a large line drawing of a sailor framed within an abstract oval teardrop, displaying detailed tattoos across his chest and arms, including a portrait of a woman labeled LILLY. Abstract ships with colorful geometric flags are illustrated in the lower right background. Inside, the volume offers full-page cartoons and visual humor strips. An essential centerpiece collectible for vintage illustration archives, André François collections, graphic design history libraries, and classic mid-century cartoon publications.
